3D position estimation of sports players through multi-view tracking

Computer vision as a field can almost be broken into four broad categories:

  • Recognition
  • Motion analysis
  • Scene reconstruction
  • Image restoration

My work falls into the motion analysis sub-field, focusing of finding and tracking people through complex scenes.

The project that I am currently working on for my masters involves finding and tracking sports players through the course of a game using multiple cameras.  The bulk of the work can be broken into two categories:

    1. Finding and tracking players in a single camera view (2D)

    1. Combining data from multiple views to track players in 3D

The first step relies on human recognition, motion detection and filter tracking whilst the second focuses more on the geometry of cameras and triangulation.
