Using online social network data to measure real-time income changes in South Africa

I am currently a MComm in Economics student, specialising in development economics, economics of technological change and industrial organisation. As an economist, the almost infinite amount of data that internet activity generates on a daily basis seems a perfect source with which to better understand human behaviour. Currently this data remains largely untapped in mainstream South African economics, which leaves me with a lot of tapping to do.
I am currently working on a project attempting to use various online sources of data (mainly from social networks) to measure income changes on a geographical level in real time.
