The MIH Media Lab at Stellenbosch University recently welcomed computer science lecturer, McElory Hoffmann, as director.
Hoffmann started his academic career in 2001 as BEngSci student at Stellenbosch University and received his PhD in Applied Mathematics in 2009. He spent one year at the University of Tübingen in Germany.
Passionate about machine learning, computer vision, jogging and his piano, Hoffman fits in with the Lab’s vision to have people from multiple disciplines involved. He currently lectures computer science and is spearheading the first Mobile Development course with colleague, Brink van der Merwe.
Hoffmann’s life motto is “Ad astra per aspera et per ludum”: To the stars through hard work and fun.
Says Hoffmann, “The research at the Media Lab is something I am passionate about. I am really excited to be joining the MIH Media Lab team to contribute to the dynamics and develop the ideas in the lab even further. Besides, the Lab is made up of brilliant students, and I thoroughly enjoy working with students.”
Hoffmann will be joining Herman Engelbrecht (research manager) and Gert-Jan van Rooyen (director).
